Review articles play a critical role in the scientific enterprise. They are often the first resource one searches for when entering a field, attempting a new technique, initiating a collaboration, or brainstorming ideas. Reviews can also feed our general curiousity by providing an efficient way to update our knowledge about a topic.
Yet, just as there has been an increase in primary scientific literature, there has been an increase in the number of review articles in many fields. Just as with research articles, the most interesting review articles will contribute something new to a field. Originality is defined by the scope of the review article and commonly takes the form of a topic or a research question. For example, one may write a topical review on capping agents in nanocrystal syntheses or a question-based review on how shape-control is achieved in nanocrystal syntheses.
Similar research examples would likely be highlighted in both reviews, but the framing would be quite different. Both approaches can lead to effective and useful review articles, but the originality will depend on what has already been published in the field.
The usefulness of different types of reviews e. This consideration will also determine whether or not the scope is of broad enough interest for a particular journal. Is a field new, with a need for introductory concepts to be introduced and connected to each other? Is the field well-established but lacking a comprehensive analysis? Has a field developed rapidly, with existing reviews missing key advances?
Or with subfields emerging? Such questions should be considered when evaluating whether or not a potential review article should be written. Finally, effective review articles move beyond accurately summarizing major findings from topically similar research articles.
Instead, they provide an analysis of major findings in which both common themes and divergent ideas are presented and evaluated in a balanced and accurate manner, how to write a review article in chemistry.
This analysis also often leads to insights and perspectives that are not obvious to the general scientific community. Reviews that achieve this level of analysis can inspire new directions in a field, stimulate debate, and establish best scientific practices. With these points in mind, Chemistry of Materials is updating its policy on review articles.
While many reviews are by invitation and this practice will continue, authors interested in contributing a review without an invitation must first provide a short document outlining both the scope and the need for the proposed review article. These documents will be reviewed internally, and if approved, the potential authors will be invited to submit. This added step is not intended to be laborious but rather to help potential authors refine their contributions so that they are appropriate for the journal as well as originaltimelyand authoritative prior to undertaking the hard work of manuscript preparation.
We look forward to working with you to highlight exciting areas of research effectively! Author Information.

The expansion of the scientific literature has produced a concomitant increase in the no. of review articles. One may posit that the sheer no. of review articles belies their function. This study examines the growth of the review literature, what types of journals publish these papers, and provides data on the citation rate of the review literature. Focus is given to the pathol. literature, defined as papers that have the word pathol. in the title, abstr. or as a key word.
The pathol. literature is proliferating at a rapid rate; from tothe total no. of original articles increased 2. of reviews increased 5. Furthermore, in that same time frame, approx. articles and reviews were not published in pathol. An examn. of the review articles that were published in pathol. journals were compared with and without review articles for the periodincluding The American Journal of Pathol. AJPThe Journal of Pathol. JP and Lab. Investigation LI. Inclusion of reviews increased the impact factor for JP by 0. However, for all three journals the total impact factor was largely a reflection of the citations of original articles.
The motivations of authors and editors who produce review articles are considered, such as career progress and increasing journal visibility, resp. The fact that many review articles are poorly cited raises concern about the harm that poor review articles can cause, first by making it more difficult to find the good reviews, and in the worst case by propagating scientific error through lack of crit. appraisal of original research. The attributes of the best reviews that serve to shape the future of science are described.
These data are presented with the hope that authors how to write a review article in chemistry editors will carefully consider their resp. roles in ensuring that the body of review literature will be of max. benefit to the scientific and biomedical community.
